PROMS INSPIRE YOUNG COMPOSERS COMPETITION
Open to British students of 12 - 18 years. Opportunity to have music performed at the Proms season, broadcast on Radio 3, and receive a BBC commission. All entrants will be invited to an "Inspire" day on 4th August 2012 for creative workshops.

INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL, THE NETHERLANDS

2012 BARLOW PRIZE
The prize is a US$ 12,000 commission for a new work for a cappella choir. This will be premiered by BBC Singers, Latvian Radio Choir, and Volti (San Francisco). 10 - 12 mins. Apply by sending two recent representative scores. One no more than 5 years old. At least one should show ability to write for unaccompanied mixed chorus. Scores with recordings will be helpful (CD).

COMPOSITION CONTEST FOR YOUNG BANDS
The National Band Association is sponsoring a composition competition open to all. Submit a work for concert band suitable for grade 2 or 3 young concert bands. The prize is a contract for the work with Alfred's Band Series and a US$ 2000 advance on furtue royalties. Send full score (pdf); full set of parts (pdf) & recording (mp3).

SVANHOLM SINGERS COMPOSITION AWARD (Sweden)
Svanholm Singers is a male-voice chamber choir, which performs a wide range from medieval to contemporary and sacred and profane. Prizes of EUR 5000, 3000, 1500 + premiere performance and publication. One entry per composer. Must be new, unpublished, and not yet performed. Lyrics should bear relevance for our time. If not in English, translation required. Need permission for text if still in copyright. The work should be for male voice a cappella choir with 4 - 12 parts. 6 - 9 mins. MAGISTRALIA COMPETITION FOR WOMEN COMPOSERS (SPAIN)
Open to all women composers. A symphonic work without solo instruments or vocals. Max. instrumentation: 2.2.2.2/ 4.2.3.1/ timps, perc(1)/ strings. Up to 10 mins. Original, unpublished, unperformed in public, unrecorded, unawarded. Prize of EUR 2500 + performance and publication. MINI OPERAS AT ENO
This competition is looking for emerging opera talent worldwide. It takes place entirely online. 10 winning scipts will be selected from the script-writing competition, which will then be presented for the composers competition. After that the selections go through to a film competition. The winner of the soundtrack competition will have a performance at an ENO showcase at the British Film Institiute, plus mentoring by the NY composer, Nico Muhly.

CERTAMEN COMPOSITORUM INTERNATIONALE ARBORETUM (POLAND)
Compositions for string orchestra (5.4.3.3.1) with conductor. No electronics. 8 - 12 mins. Must be unpublished, unperformed and unawarded. Prizes of 30,000 PLN; 10,000 PLN; 5000 PLN. Youngest composer qualified will get mastercasses with Penderecki. Anon entry. Entry fee: 200 PLN. Six finalists will be selected and their pieces played by the Radom Chamber Orchestra in Poland on 10th November 2012, when the prizes will be allotted. Finalists will be invited to the concert and transport and accomodation costs will be covered by the organisers.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION "MARENOSTRUM", ITALY
Compose a work based on, or applying in some way, a fragment or a part of a melody by Hildegard von Bingen for recorder solo, presenting it as a contemporary composition. The composition will be played by a soloist, on one or several recorders - soloist can also use voice. 5 - 10 mins. Can be sent as paper format or digital as pdf. Send 5 copies. Can send a recording or computer simulation on CD in 5 copies (optional). Materials will not be returned. Can have been performed before, but not published or awarded a prize. Anon entry. SUONOSONDA INTERNATIONAL COMPOSERS COMPETITION
SuonaSonda is a half-yearly research review which studies recent music. It includes a CD and pocket scores of selected entries. The composers competition is for a work, not yet recorded, of 1 - 4 players taken from: soprano voice, flute, piano and double bass. Can include electronics. Up to 10 mins. Send 6 copies. Entry fee: EUR 75. The prize consists of performance, publication and recording, and includes promotion of the work. (Please note that the composer does not receive any compensation for further recording or broadcasting). Apart from this competition, there is a call for works which have already been recorded, to be included in this review. These works can be compositions for any instrumental ensemble; electro-acoustic; jazz; innovative rock. Also a call for musicological essays and images/photographs.

ATHENA WOMEN'S MUSIC FESTIVAL
The ATHENA Festival at Murray State University, Kentucky, late Feb - early March 2013, is devoted to music by women. Composers are invited to send scores in 2 categories: unpublished chamber music and unpublished choral pieces. Chamber: 2 - 8 players from: sop, mezzo, ten, bass/baritone, flute, clarinet, oboe/bsn/alt sax, perc, violin, cello, piano or piano 4 hands or 2 pianos 4 hands, sax 4tet or brass 5tet. At least 8 mins. Send 2 copies of scores. Choral: SATB a cappella, divisi up to 8 parts. 5 - 10 mins. Should include piano reduction. Suitable for undergrad choir. Send 4 copies of scores. Both categories: preference for pieces not yet performed. If performed they should not be commissioned or awarded. Send scores. Recordings are not required but are recommended. HAZEL RENSHAW CAROL COMPOSITION PRIZE
The Music Makers of London, a small a cappella chamber choir based in London, are launching this composition prize. It is for unaccompanied SATB choir. Must be unperformed and unpublished. Occasional divisi is acceptable. 4 - 5 mins from a text in public domain, chosen by the composer. Adjudicators are Judith Weir and Patrick Russill. Prizes of �500 and �200. All shortlisted carols will be considered for publication by Shorter House Editions, and performed at the choir carol concert on 13 Dec 2012, in London UK.  All short-listed entrants must attend the concert. Submit 2 bound copies of score and also pdf and midi file + contact details etc.

COMPETITION FOR VISUAL MUSIC, DENMARK
Composers and sound artists are invited to create a piece of visual music. Can be acoustic, electro-acoustic or installation works. Acoustic ensembles should be for the following instruments (whole or part of group): flute, trumpet, guitar, piano, percussion (with various doublings). Participants can interpret the theme "visual music" freely. Duration: 10 mins. A jury will select 5 works for performance 9th December 2012 in Aarhus, Denmark. Housing and transport costs will be provided for composers to attend. One piece or pieces will also be chosen to be performed later in the season.
